South Simcoe police welcomes new civilian members

Special constable, property and evidence clerk, community support liaison join force

On Wednesday, May 25, three new full-time civilian members of the South Simcoe Police Service were introduced at the meeting of the Bradford West Gwillimbury/Innisfil Police Services Board.

Chief Andrew Fletcher shared some information about their backgrounds and experience with board members.

Darrell Kottka: Special constable, Courts Unit

Darrell was born in Parry Sound but grew up in Midland until the age of 22. Darrell moved to Barrie when he was 23 and currently resides in Simcoe County with his young family.

Darrell graduated from the Georgian College police foundations program in 2005 and since graduating has worked in a variety of jobs gaining life experience. In 2006 he started working at Morton Youth Services in Barrie as a corrections officer and in 2018 became the facilities program director, and then superintendent of Morton Youth Services in 2019 until it closed in 2020.

In June 2021 Darrell became a part-time special constable with the South Simcoe Police Service in the Courts Services Unit, where he gained valuable experience towards his ultimate goal of becoming a police officer with the South Simcoe Police Service.

Lindsay Case: Property and evidence clerk

Lindsay grew up in Newmarket and currently resides in Simcoe County. Lindsay attended Nipissing University in North Bay enrolled in the bachelor of arts in criminal justice — policing stream, where she graduated with distinction.

Her final year was spent at Canadore College in North Bay, where she obtained a diploma in police foundations. As part of this co-op program Lindsay worked with the North Bay Police Service, working in their property and evidence section. In 2018, she was a summer student with York Regional Police, where she worked at the Community Safety Village.

Shannon Lowe: Community support liaison

Shannon was born and raised in Toronto and after graduating high school held a number of jobs in the private sector with a focus towards customer service.

Shannon completed a certificate program in human resources at Georgian College in 2014 and then went on to work for the Canadian Red Cross as a HR supervisor.

In 2015 Shannon had the opportunity to move to the east coast, where she worked as a senior safety officer. She returned to Ontario in 2018 and worked in various contract positions with the Ontario Provincial Police including with their Healthy Workplace Team, where she supported frontline members and their families with mental wellness supports.
