POLICE SERVICE

(Innisfil, ON) On Sunday, April 3, 2016, an Innisfil resident called South Simcoe Police to report an Internet fraud.

She told officers that she had been contacted by a man responding to an ad she placed on a local buy and sell site.

He sent her a cheque for a much larger amount of money than was necessary, the overpayment to be given to a third party.

She was cautious and checked with her bank and when the cheque turned out to be counterfeit, she called police. She did not lose any money.

Beware of anyone who overpays you for goods and services.

In these cases, the cheque is either stolen or counterfeit, and they will use you and your bank account to lauder the money.

Often they will ask you to wire the excess funds back to them.
