Kempenfelt Drive in Barrie was closed Saturday afternoon for a police investigation.

The death of a 35-year-old man in Barrie on Saturday afternoon is being investigated by the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2023, the SIU says a woman fled from a vehicle in Barrie’s east end and contacted city police.

The vehicle left the scene, but Barrie police officers were able to track the vehicle.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., in the area of Kempenfelt Drive and Nelson Square, the SIU says officers made visual and verbal contact with the man.

Officers then initiated brief negotiations with the man.

Shortly afterwards, the SIU says the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php .

The SIU is an independent government agency which investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
