NEWS RELEASE
BARRIE POLICE SERVICE

The Barrie Police Service is warning local residents after being alerted that scammers are using the Barrie police’s phone number as part of a never-ending Canada Revenue Scam (CRA).

Scammers claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have been targeting people throughout the City of Barrie and are using fake phone numbers to avoid being caught. Recently the number being used belongs to the Barrie Police Service (705-725-7025).

For several weeks citizens throughout the Barrie area have been called numerous times by someone claiming to be a police officer with Barrie Police.  The caller (scammer) claims to be a police officer and threatens them over the phone with hefty fines, arrest and jail time if he/she does not send money for an outstanding tax bill. Callers have called back the number that has displayed on the caller ID, and the caller reaches the Barrie Police Service.

The scammers will search the internet and attach any phone number; which can be a local police service or government agency. These scammers are relentless and they continue to invent and even reuse old scams to prey on vulnerable persons.

The Barrie Police Service does not handle tax related matters for the CRA or any other financial institutions.

Anyone who receives such calls should contact the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
