Police searching for witnesses after drive-by shooting on Highway 400

A driver heard popping sounds and discovered two bullet holes in his vehicle; OPP say incident happened on Highway 400 Sunday night

The OPP are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed what appears to be a drive-by shooting Sunday night on Highway 400 near Barrie.

At approximately 11 p.m. Sunday night, the OPP received a call from a driver who said his vehicle had been shot at.

The driver/witness described travelling southbound on Highway 400 between Mapleview Drive and Innisfil Beach Road and hearing popping sounds as two vehicles sped past his vehicle.

After examining the vehicle in question, investigating officers located what they believed to be two bullet holes in the rear of the vehicle and located a bullet fragment from within the victim's vehicle.

Sgt. Kerry Scmidt told BarrieToday Tuesday there are “very limited descriptions of the suspects' vehicles,” and admitted this may be a difficult situation to gather information about.

“Certainly, there are challenges and solving this without the assistance of the public may be hard,” said Schmidt. “That is why we’re hoping for anyone who was in the area who may have some information to help the investigation.”

Schmidt did say the driver/witness in this case “may have been an innocent bystander between these two other vehicles and there is no indication he was targeted.”

The two vehicles that sped by the victim are described as an SUV and a sedan.

If anyone has dash-cam footage while driving in the area between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., investigators would like to review it. If you have footage or any information, please contact the Aurora OPP at 905-841-5777.
