On Feb. 22, 2012, Barrie Police received a report on an elaborate fraud that appeared to be anchored by a Barrie resident. Officers were first made aware of the fraud by a senior security manager of McDonald's Restaurants of Canada.
It appeared a male residing in Barrie had been purchasing gift cards online using five different credit cards from various United States citizens. The gift cards were sent to an address on Penton Drive, in the City of Barrie, and linked to a (then) 18-year-old male who resided there.
Fraud Investigators were unable to locate the male as it was believed he fled the area after being kicked out of his house. A warrant was issued for the youth as his whereabouts were unknown.
On Saturday, Mar. 11, 2017 the Barrie Police Service was notified by the Canadian Border Service Agency located in Vancouver, British Columbia that the wanted male was on a plane heading towards Pearson International Airport.
Officers attended the airport to meet the male as he arrived in Toronto, placing him under arrest on the strength of the five year old warrant.
The (now) 23-year-old Barrie male was charged with:
- Youth - Use credit card data X 5
- Youth - Possession of property obtained by crime X 5
- Youth - Fraud under $5,000 X 5
The male was transported to the Barrie Police Service where he spent the night awaiting bail court in the morning.
