Emergency crews responded to a construction site on Dunlop Street West between Eccles and Anne Streets on Thursday afternoon following a workplace accident.

An official with Simcoe County Paramedic Services has confirmed a man was killed in a workplace accident on Dunlop Street West, Thursday afternoon.

Shortly before 2 p.m., emergency crews were called to the construction site at 233-245 Dunlop St. W., near Anne Street.

"The male patient was assessed by paramedics at the scene and he was pronounced dead on scene," the representative told BarrieToday.

The man's age is unknown at this time.

It remains unclear exactly what happened at the construction site.

The incident is now being investigated by the Ministry of Labour, Barrie police and the coroner's office.

Dunlop Street West has been closed to vehicular traffic between Anne and Eccles streets. The closure is expected to remain in place for a few more hours.

An ORNGE air ambulance responded to the scene and landed in a field behind Barrie Fire and Emergency Services headquarters on Dunlop Street West.

Witnesses told BarrieToday they saw an air ambulance crew arrive to the scene, but left without transporting anyone to the helicopter.

Mallory Purvis said she was in her home directly across the street from the site when she heard a loud bang.

"I thought it was the kids making noise, but I heard (people) screaming (on) the road and looked out front," Purvis told BarrieToday. "There was a lot of commotion at the work site and I yelled if anyone needed an ambulance, but I didn't hear anything back."

The investigation is ongoing as to what led to the fatal accident.

The construction site is an eight-storey, affordable housing project near downtown Barrie.
