Theft, involving 'multiple' types of cryptocurrency, has been under investigation since October

Orillia OPP continues to investigate a type of theft that is “relatively new” locally.

That’s how Orillia OPP detachment commander Insp. Coyer Yateman described the theft over $5,000 involving cryptocurrency.

The theft was reported in October and few details are being released because of the ongoing investigation.

Yateman said it involved “multiple” kinds of cryptocurrency and that the victim was from this area.

“Cryptocurrency is a lot more complex” than traditional currency, he said, adding that, in turn, makes the investigation more complex. “It is going to take some time.”

“Even a handful of years ago, it was around,” he said of cryptocurrency, “but not a lot of people had access to it.”

That is changing, and Yateman urges people to “educate themselves about cryptocurrency” and seek out professional advice first.
