A Barrie man faces several charges after city police say he tried to steal food from a Wellington Street bakery Wednesday.
Shortly after noon on Jan. 22, police were called after a man entered the business and allegedly tried to take food items on display.
Police say employees recovered what had been taken as the man fled the store. He was last seen heading toward Anne Street North on foot.
"Equipped with a detailed description, responding police officers were able to locate the male as he walked through the parking lot of an Anne Street business, just south of Dunlop Street West," police stated in a news release.
"Although he tried to run, he was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of some other food that had been taken, and was in the process of being reported, from another nearby business," police added.
The 42-year-old Barrie man was taken to police headquarters on Fairview Road where the investigation continued.
He has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. Police say they also discovered "several" outstanding local warrants.
The accused was held for a bail hearing.
"Police credit the detailed description provided by the involved bakery in bringing this series of lunchtime thefts to a quick and successful conclusion," stated the release.
