Meaford man charged after OPP find inert grenades in vehicle

OPP say the area man also had police clothing and loaded handgun

A 56-year-old Meaford man was arrested and now faces multiple charges after provincial police say they found hand grenades, a loaded handgun and police clothing in the car he was driving. 

According to a news release from the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP, the man was pulled over for speeding on Highway 401 in South Glengarry Township at around 6:30 a.m., on April 11. 

"During the investigation, officers observed a loaded handgun, police-related clothing and gear as well as what appeared to be a hand grenade," states the news release. 

Police closed the eastbound lanes of Highway 401, near County Road 27, and called in the explosive disposal unit to assist. Two inert hand grenades were found, but were confirmed as unable to explode. 

Gough Lewis from Meaford was arrested and charged with the following: 

  • Dangerous operation
  • Failure to comply with release order, other than to attend court - three counts
  • Unauthorized possession of weapon - two counts
  • Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose - two counts
  • Possession of prohibited device or ammunition for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm - two counts
  • Occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was firearm
  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm - two counts
  • Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - cocaine
  • Breach of firearms regulation, transport firearm or restricted weapon - two counts
  • Driver motor vehicle, perform stunt, excessive speed

Police kept the accused in custody pending a bail hearing. None of the charges have been proven in court.
