On Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, around 2:20 p.m., South Simcoe Police Service Marine Unit officers were notified of a kayaker in distress off Innisfil Beach Park.

A man had rented a kayak but had become fatigued paddling ashore against a heavy wind. His son called for help. Officers aboard the John Wardrop II located the man in his kayak over 2 km from shore in 85 feet of water. He was unfamiliar with kayaking and was ill prepared for the conditions.

Officers later spoke to the kayak rental company and cautioned them on renting to clients when they are unfamiliar with the sport or in poor weather.

On Monday, Aug. 7, 2017 at midnight, South Simcoe Police Service Marine Unit officers were called from their homes to respond to a call of two stranded vessels. One boat had engine trouble and had summoned a friend in a second vessel for assistance. It too had trouble and both vessels were adrift off Lockhart Road.

Officers were on their way to assist when they learned the vessels were underway. At 12:45 a.m, the boaters were met by officers at Innisfil Beach Park. All seven persons aboard the two boats were found to be in good health.

Boaters are reminded to check weather conditions and equipment before venturing out on the water. An adequate supply of gas and a fully charged cell phone are recommended far all those venturing out on our waterways.
