Man charged with impaired, assaulting police in downtown incident

'The officer was assisted by citizens on scene until additional police arrived,' says Barrie police official

A 51-year-old local man has been charged in yesterday’s traffic stop in downtown Barrie that also saw an officer allegedly be assaulted.

At approximately 3:50 p.m., Sept. 20, police say an officer on routine patrol in the area of Maple Avenue and Dunlop Street West heard screeching tires and located a car parked sideways in the middle of the downtown intersection.

“It was suspected that the driver was impaired, however they failed to comply with requests from the officer. The officer was assisted by citizens on scene until additional police arrived,” Barrie police communications co-ordinator Jennett Mays told BarrieToday.

A 51-year-old Barrie man has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drug and assaulting a peace officer.

A photo posted on Facebook showed several police vehicles surrounding a vehicle in the intersection, Tuesday afternoon. Police have previously said the responding officer required assistance taking the driver into custody.

No details were released about any injuries to the officer involved.
