A Barrie woman faces impaired driving charges after police received a tip from a local citizen, Sunday evening.

City police say officers located the vehicle and spoke to the woman after she pulled into her driveway in north-end Barrie.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., May 28, police say they received a call from a concerned citizen who was following a suspected impaired driver. The witness was able to provide a complete description of the vehicle, which included the make, colour and licence plate, as well as a detailed description of the driver.

The vehicle was followed out of the downtown area to a residence in northeast Barrie, police say.

Upon arrival at the residence and after a brief investigation, responding officers placed under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle over .80 milligrams.

The 33-year-old driver, who is a resident of Barrie, was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where a breathalyzer technician determined she was operating a motor vehicle at almost three times the legal limit.

The accused has been charged operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), as well as two offences under the Highway Traffic Act. She is scheduled to appear in Barrie court on June 14.

The woman's vehicle impounded for seven days and the accused has had her driver’s licence suspended for 90 days.

"Barrie police wish to thank the citizen who called in and reported their concerns about this driver to police as their efforts contributed significantly to making Barrie streets safer last night for those who use them," police stated in a news release on Monday.
