Two men face impaired charges following incidents at Midland parks

MIDLAND - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to two separate incidents over the weekend which were the direct result of members of the public notifying the OPP of a possible impaired driver in the interest of public safety.

Firstly, at 7:14 p.m. on July 24, 2019, officers responded to the Pete Pettersen Park boat ramp area off Harbourview Drive to investigate a possible impaired boater. The vessel operator was located and spoken to by officers who entered into a drinking and driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation Andreas Benkovszki, 45 years old of Midland, has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

His driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days as per the conditions of the administrative drivers licence suspension (ADLS). He was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Aug. 1, 2019.

Secondly, at 5:49 p.m. on July 24, 2019, officers responded to Little Lake Park after locating the suspect vehicle of a driving complaint as well. Officers entered into an impaired driving investigation after speaking with the male driver and transported him to the OPP detachment for further investigation by an OPP Drug Recognition officer (DRE).

As a result of the evaluation completed by the DRE officer Kevin Moreau, 56 years old of Midland, has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada driving offence.

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

His driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days as per the conditions of the administrative drivers licence suspension (ADLS). He was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Aug. 16, 2019.

Officers remind vessel operators and drivers that an essential part our enforcement effort is to save lives and reduce injuries on our waterways and roadways while promoting and educating the public about safe boating practices.
