Fatal overdose at party leads to manslaughter charge for Innisfil man

City police launched an investigation after a 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at Barrie hospital last week

Barrie police have arrested and charged a 36-year-old man in connection with a fatal drug overdose at a party last week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, shortly after 9 a.m., city police were informed of an incident that had taken place earlier at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) after a 25-year-old man was transported to the Barrie hospital without vital signs.

From the investigation that followed, police say a group of people had gathered at a home in Innisfil, consuming alcohol and illegal drugs.

Police say fentanyl, which had allegedly been supplied by an individual who was present, had been used.

The man at RVH was determined to be suffering from a drug overdose.

Police allege at no time were emergency services contacted and his health continued to deteriorate.

The man was later taken to hospital by some of the people with whom he had gathered, but by then attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead by hospital staff, police say.

On Thursday, just before 3:30 p.m., 36-year-old Stefanidis Haralampos from Innisfil was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Trafficking in a controlled substance, contrary to Section 5(1), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Manslaughter, contrary to Section 236(b), Criminal Code of Canada
  • Failure to comply with a probation order, contrary to Section 733.1, Criminal Code of Canada.
After appearing for a bail hearing on Friday, Haralampos was remanded into custody and is next scheduled to appear in a Barrie court on Friday, March 26.
