'Edged weapon' used in altercation between two teens at Holly Community Centre: police

Boy, 14, charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; 15-year-old taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

A fight near a south-end Barrie community centre led to a 15-year-old being taken to hospital and a 14-year-old up now facing weapon charges.

City police responded to a call at 7:23 p.m., Saturday, for an incident at the west side of the Holly Community Centre, which is located on Mapleton Avenue.

What started as a physical encounter between two teenagers ended up with one being slashed with a knife, police say.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday a 15-year-old boy was struck with “an edged weapon." Police were able to locate the suspect a short while after with the help of the canine unit.

“This appears to be an isolated incident, though there were other teens around when it happened,” said Leon.

The injured 15-year-old was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 14-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was released with a June court date.
