SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY – The Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would light to remind the public of a few safety tips while adjusting to travelling during the upcoming time change.

Daylight savings time will bring darkness outside at a much earlier time of the day. People are travelling to and from work in their motor vehicles and even bicycles. Visibility on our roads is more challenging when it is dark outside.

The OPP would like to remind the public of a few safety tips while adjusting to travelling during the time change.

Motorists

  • Shorter days can make it harder to see children who are playing as well as people walking or riding their bikes.
  • Sunrise later in the morning causes increased brightness to driver’s
  • Watch for children who love to play in piles of leaves on the side of the road
  • Slowdown in those areas that children may be playing as visibility is limited with shorter hours of daylight
  • Slowdown on wet pavement as fallen leaves can make pavement slippery causing poor traction and visibility
  • Be vigilant of the increased presence of school buses as fall is the beginning of the school year

Pedestrians

  • Walk facing traffic, wear reflective clothing or carry a flashlight.
  • Keep the volume low on any audio device so you can hear any dangerous situations approaching and take well-lit routes.
