Internet fraud

INNISFIL - On Tuesday, April 5, an Alcona woman called South Simcoe Police to report a fraud. She told the officer that she had received an email bill from Apple about some movie rentals.

One of the options on the email was to "click here if you did not make this purchase.”

She was directed to an on-line form to receive a refund.

After filing out the form she felt that it may have been a mistake, so she contacted Apple directly and confirmed her fears.

In this case the victim is not out any money but her personal information has been compromised.

This type of fraud is called "Phishing".

Scammers will send emails out to thousands of people, hoping one of them will click on a link and give up their banking or account information.

They then use this information to make purchases or assume your identity.

Often they prey on peoples fears to urge them to click on a dangerous link.

Never click on unknown links, and confirm all e-mails from a reputable known source.

Install a quality spam filter on your device, and think twice about every action you take on-line.
