Charges dropped against woman accused of defrauding elderly couple

'There’s no reasonable prospect of conviction,' Crown prosecutor tells the court following investigation in Innisfil
court

A woman accused of defrauding an elderly Innisfil couple 16 months ago is no longer facing charges.

“The Crown will be withdrawing the charges. There’s no reasonable prospect of conviction,” Crown attorney Kate Wright told the court via teleconference Monday without expanding on the reasons.

An elderly couple reported to South Simcoe police that they had been defrauded by a longtime house cleaner, which led police to launch an investigation Feb. 1, 2019.

In announcing the charges at the time, police said their investigation revealed that numerous fraudulent cheques had been cashed on the couple's bank account. They said the money had not been recovered.

Annette Collinson, who was 49 years old at the time, was charged.

Police referred questions to the Crown’s office and did not say if any money was recovered.
