An autopsy has confirmed that the 50-year-old man who was discovered after a condominium fire in Barrie on Saturday died as a result of the fire, according to Barrie police.

“The post mortem was completed late Monday and the cause of death is consistent with being unable to safely get out of an active fire,” said Peter Leon, communications co-ordinator with the Barrie police.

The call came in at 9:43 p.m. on Saturday night of a structure fire at Shadowood Road near Meadow Lane. Barrie police responded with Barrie Fire. Simcoe County paramedics also attended the scene and resuscitation efforts were made.

The deceased was confirmed to be the homeowner.

Leon said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was at the scene throughout the day on Sunday.

“Our investigations can take up to 45 days to complete,” said Ryan Betts, acting manager of public education and communications for the fire marshal’s office.

“In this case, we will be waiting on results from the Centre of Forensic Sciences. Our forensic engineers have seized some exhibits to conduct further examinations on. They may or may not have contributed to the origin of the fire. That is what we are hoping to determine,” said Betts.

Once completed, the fire marshal’s report will be “forwarded to the lead detective” from Barrie Police.
