Buckets of paint dumped on Wasaga's new rainbow crosswalk

Vandalism occurred in the early morning hours of July 20 and a suspect was photographed by nearby surveillance cameras

Less than a week after a new rainbow crosswalk was installed in Wasaga Beach, it has been vandalized.

Just before 4 a.m., on July 20, someone dumped buckets of paint on the new crosswalk.

Crime Stoppers of Simcoe Dufferin Muskoka put out a call for information via its social media channels, posting surveillance stills of the suspect while he is dumping paint on the crosswalk. The photos appear to show a white male holding two paint cans in one arm and dumping a third onto the crosswalk.

The rainbow was painted at the intersection of Mosley and 39th streets in front of the Wasaga Beach Youth Centre on July 14.

According to a news release from the Town of Wasaga Beach, the crosswalk's official unveiling was to take place during Simcoe Pride, which runs from July 26 to Aug. 8.

Wasaga Beach communications officer Michael Gennings confirmed the unveiling will go ahead on July 26.

The town has been able to clean the poured paint off of the crosswalk.

Anyone with information on the vandalism, or who can identify the person in the surveillance photos is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit www.p3tips.com. Those providing information can remain anonymous.

Huronia West OPP is investigating the incident. They can be reached at 1-888-310-1122.
