Bogus bills lead to heroin, loaded gun, stolen Baycats rings

Police were initially responding to report of counterfeit $10 bills in Penetanguishene when investigation expanded

PENETANGUISHENE - Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Southern Georgian Bay detachment responded to a report of counterfeit Canadian $10 bills being used at a local business just after 7 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019. 

The investigation led to the arrest of two males in relation to the report of counterfeit money.   

Further investigation led to the seizure of drugs, weapons and recovered stolen property from recent daytime residential break and enters. The items include but are not limited to:  

  • Approximately 11 ounces, combined total, of drugs suspected to be Cocaine, Purple Heroin, Methamphetamine and Heroin.
  • A loaded handgun, imitation handgun style firearm, a knife and polymer knuckles.
  • Two Barrie Baycats championship rings.
  • Four ladies watches and a ladies ring.

Police have charged 36-year-old Kevin Monroe from the town of Midland and 29-year-old Vance Sylvester of Christian Island First Nation. The two are facing 20 and 27 charges respectively. 

Each are facing the following charges, some of which include multiple counts:  

  • Uttering Counterfeit Money
  • Possessing Counterfeit Money
  • Fraud Under $5,000
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted or Prohibited Firearm
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Possession of an Imitation Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing there was Firearm
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Breach of Firearms Regulation - display firearm or restricted weapon
  • Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition

Sylvester is facing the following additional charges:  

  • Possession of a prohibited device of ammunition
  • Possession of a loaded prohibited firearm

Both men were held for a video Bail Hearing on Saturday June 15, 2019 at the Ontario Court of Justice.
