NEWS RELEASE

South Simcoe Police Service wants to remind residents to ensure they are calling legitimate numbers when seeking internet support.

A victim recently called a "support line" for help with setting up the Apple ID for a new iPhone. The phony support person advised the victim to pay for the service with Apple iTunes gift cards. The victim complied but eventually became suspicious and called police but not before losing a quantity of cash.

Always ensure the number you are calling is a legitimate support line and watch out for look-alike URLs. If someone asks you to pay for anything using gift cards, it is a scam.  There are never any circumstances where a legitimate business or government agency will ask for payment this way.
