Barrie resident faces impaired charges following crash that pinned motorcycle driver

Collision happened Thursday evening on Highway 90; Police say motorcycle driver had to be freed from underneath the car

SPRINGWATER TWP. – Members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 90 at approximately 7:10 p.m., Thursday evening.

The collision occurred between a car and a motorcycle. The operator of the motorcycle was trapped underneath the car, and once freed was transported to a Toronto-area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, but was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Christos Balis, 49, of Barrie, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol
  • Operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation causing bodily harm

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on Oct. 19, 2021.
