At this morning’s Barrie Police Services Board meeting, Chief Kimberley Greenwood brought forward a recommendation to proceed with a pilot project that will see body-worn cameras issued to a number of front-line, uniformed officers.
Since 2016, the Barrie Police Service has been working towards implementing body-worn cameras. After extensive research and work with other organizations across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, and a careful analysis of the results of other implementations, we are now ready to move forward with a pilot project of our own.
The Barrie Police Service now has in place the foundation to support the technology and the secure storage of digital data that will allow us to move forward with this important new tool.
“I look forward to the results of the body-worn camera pilot project and the benefits it will bring as a tool to support our commitment to community safety and our officers,” said Chief Kimberley Greenwood. “We have been working on this initiative for a number of years and it’s very timely that we are ready to launch the pilot project as body-worn cameras have recently been discussed by a number of services.”
Planning stages are already underway, and the pilot project is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2020.
An evaluation of the results will take place and a report will be presented to the Barrie Police Services Board.
