Barrie Police charge mother and son with trafficking after fentanyl overdose

Barrie Police have made two arrests after an investigation was launched in regards to a fentanyl overdose that happened over the weekend.

On Saturday, Mar. 11, 2017 Barrie Police attended a residence on Penetanguishene Road, in the City of Barrie, for a female who was believed to have overdosed on Fentanyl. 

Officers located and seized two fentanyl patches, including packaging with the lot number clearly visible, in the female’s bedroom. Information was obtained the 23-year-old female had purchased two patches from an acquaintance from Owen Sound. 

On Monday, Mar. 13, 2017 Barrie Police detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment on 6th Street, in Owen Sound. A box of fentanyl patches with the same lot number was located within the residence; two of the patches were missing from the box. 

The suspect was not on scene at the time of the warrant however turned himself in at the Barrie Police Service on Monday, Mar. 13, 2017. As the investigation developed, police were made aware the patches were the property of the suspect's mother, who resides in the Owen Sound apartment. 

It was believed she was involved in the distribution of the two patches and subsequently attended the Barrie Police Service on Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2017 to turn herself in as well.

The 54-year-old Owen Sound female was charged with trafficking a controlled substance - fentanyl and her 26-year-old son was charged with possession of a controlled substance - fentanyl and trafficking a controlled substance - fentanyl.

Both accused were held for a bail hearing to answer to their charges. 

Barrie Police are reminding citizens during the months of February and March 2017, Crime Stoppers will offer a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the seizure of illicit Fentanyl or derivatives for the purpose of trafficking and/or the arrest of individuals involved in trafficking Fentanyl in our communities.
