(April 28, 1926 – February 17, 2018) – It is with profound sadness that the family of Douglas Anderson Wilson announce his passing on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in his 92nd year. Doug passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Beatrice (née Nichols), his children Richard (Brenda), Donald, Lorraine, Douglas (Kelly), John (Kathy) and his treasured eleven grandchildren; Carrie, Jenny, Kimberly, Valerie, Catherine, James, Lauren, Jessy-Lee, Jami-Lynn, Emily, Carly and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by daughter-in-law Catherine (née Scarpino), sister Ester Sudyko and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents James and Alice, his siblings James, Norman and Gus, his third son Kenneth and daughter-in-law Yvonne (née Hobbs). Doug grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and eventually met the love of his life, Beatrice. They married in 1947 sharing 70 years together. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy he joined the Winnipeg Police Force and in 1959 found his professional career as an Engineer Technician with Trans Canada Pipeline. As the pipeline moved across Canada, Doug helped to pioneer new ideas, bringing gas to Ontario and worked on projects as far away as Australia, eventually settling the family in Toronto, then to Pickering, Ontario. Retiring in 1984, Doug returned to his love of the water and joined Frenchman Bay Yacht Club where sailing became his passion. Sailing took him and his family on many adventures throughout Lake Ontario, Georgian Bay, Intracoastal Waterways, oceans and gulfs where lifelong friendships were made and still endure today. He treasured the memories of family Caribbean cruise ship vacations where tales of past adventures were shared around the table with a rum and coke. Doug’s favourite pastime was family time celebrating holidays, birthdays, graduations and achievements together. He was and continues to be “OUR ANCHOR.” Doug had a strong will and overcame many challenges in life and stood as a role model for many people with low vision and COPD. He depicted the meaning of accepting one’s destiny! Loved and respected by so many relatives and friends, he was always interested in the lives of others and their stories. Very special thanks and utmost gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Devon Turner and his staff, the entire team at LIHN, St. Elizabeth Nursing and Care Partners for their never ending care and support, easing our mind during this journey and helping Doug throughout his transition. A Celebration of Life will be held at the JENNETT FUNERAL & CREMATION CENTRE, 152 Bradford Street, Barrie on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 2 p.m. with visitation from 1-2 p.m. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to the Salvation Army and are greatly appreciated by the family.
