It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Allan McDonald of Barrie, Ontario at the age of 94. After a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease, he passed peacefully with his son Mike at his side at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Sunday, January 13th, 2019.
Allan was the son of the late James and Jesse McDonald of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, and was predeceased by his beloved wife Theresa, his brothers Danny, Alex and Phonse, and sisters Mary, Katherine and Margaret. He is survived by his loving son Mike and will be sadly missed by his brother Ran, as well as his numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Born and raised in New Waterford, Cape Breton, N.S., like so many others at that time, Al left home at a tender age to join the war. He was a veteran of the Korean War and later served in the second wave of U.N. Peacekeepers. Finally, after a long and successful military career, he retired from Base Borden as a Graphic Artist and continued to pursue his passion for painting, honouring his fellow Canadian Military members through his donations of art to Canada’s War Museum. He remained very active in the community of Barrie through volunteering as a parent in Scout’s and hockey, his ongoing involvement with St. Mary’s church, the Knights of Columbus, New Beginnings, Out of the Cold and the Cursillo Movement, to name a few.
Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Friday, January 18th, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Mary’s Church, 65 Amelia St., Barrie on Saturday, January 19th at 10 am. Following the service, guests are invited to remain for a reception luncheon in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson’s Association or Covenant House would be greatly appreciated by the family.
