Age 78, passed away peacefully in his home on March 14, 2017. Reay is survived by his loving wife of 57 years (Catherine) Joan Mackay (nee Little), daughters Sheila and Glenna, sons-in-law Michael and Alasdair and three wonderful grandchildren Katryna, Colin and Kayleigh. Also survived by cousins Margaret and Robert Bower. Reay was born on January 5, 1939, in Toronto, to Colin Mackay and Mary Jane Muir Mackay (nee Spence). He graduated from Oakwood Collegiate in 1959, subsequently received his BA from York University and M.A.Ed from Niagara University. Reay was a Mathematics and Science Teacher at Fairbank Senior Public School in the Township of York until his retirement, in 1994. Reay was acknowledged as a child prodigy at the age of 13, when he won his first of many professional piping competitions. He also won the North American Professional Solo Piping Championship, 6 times consecutively. Successfully led two top level competition bands, the 48th Highlanders of Canada and Metropolitan Toronto Police Pipe Band to many victories! Reay was also known as a world class adjudicator and travelled extensively. Reay received an Honorary Life Membership from the PPBSO, which he cherished immensely. Reay was a true musician and had a very deep passion for his music. He was a piper, accordionist, pianist, singer, composer and teacher. Reay’s passions extended beyond his music and included his family, boating, woodworking, hockey and to be a lifelong learner. A private family-only service will take place followed by a Celebration of Life event to be announced at a later date. He will be sadly missed but in our memories forever. Sláinte!
