Nov. 24, 1926 – April 8, 2015
Died peacefully at Royal Victoria Hospital Barrie, after a long and rich life with his wife Mary (predeceased) of 64 years. A life that started in Hamilton at Casa Maria Hospital at 6:30 pm on November 24, 1926. His traveling ways began when he learned to walk at age 1 year and two weeks. Growing up in Hamilton and experiencing life as the second son of a railway man, he plied his career as a soldier, a banker, freight delivery driver and skiing enthusiast until he met a naive young girl from the north end of Hamilton named Mary. He and Mary then traveled the rails from Hamilton to Toronto to London, to Burlington while working for the CNR in various capacities, until they finally retired to a farm outside the small Village of Hawkestone, where his grandfather had been the local blacksmith, and then to Barrie. Along the way they brought two children into the world, Ross Joslin of Barrie and Jacqueline Diguer of Ottawa, and taught them how to live and love as they did. Thus began the extended family with Beverly Joslin and Philip Diguer, soon to be followed by Grandchildren Rhonda, Brenda, Paul, Matthew, Michelle and Alyssa. Then came the great Grandchildren Ava, Austin, Avery, Allison, and Madeleine. Successful family planning by today`s standards. The family will receive guests at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 201 Minet’s Point Road at Yonge Street, Barrie Ontario on April 15th, at 2 pm, followed by a celebration of Doug’s life at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow. Cremation has already taken place. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kidney Foundation, would be appreciated by the family.
