Peacefully, with family by her side at Hospice Simcoe on Sunday July 1st 2018 at the age of 76. Beloved wife of the late Dr. David Johns. Dear mother of Kristen Hagerman (Fred), Stephen James, and step mother of Geoffrey Johns (Nola) and Kathy Ceroni (Mark). Proud grandmother of Spencer, Jillian, Jack, Ella, and Bianca. Loving sister to William Wall (Rebecca) and Cathy Woolley (Jim). Joyce was predeceased by her first husband, Harry Nixon James. Sadly missed, but greatly celebrated by other dear family and friends.

Joyce was born and raised in Stayner, Ontario. She graduated from Royal Victoria Hospital Nursing school in 1962, and worked at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto, Little Current Hospital, and retired after serving 25 years in obstetrics at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Throughout her career, she focused on the well-being of mothers, newborn babies and the families that surrounded them. She was respected by nursing and physician colleagues at RVH for her compassion, empathy and grace under pressure.

Joyce served her community by volunteering at the May Court Club for 29 years, and was an active member of Collier Street United Church for over 40 years. She loved to golf, play bridge, skate, and bike. Her greatest passion, however, was bringing family and friends together for festive holiday celebrations, followed by delicious pies, other desserts and lively conversation. A renowned garden whisperer, Joyce created patches of beauty wherever she placed her green thumbs. It seems only fitting then, that flowers at the ceremony would be greatly appreciated.

Joyce will be remembered most for her grace and kindness, her love of family and the courage and resilience she carried with her throughout her life. Guests will be received at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie, on Wednesday July 11, from 7 to 9 pm. A celebration of Joyce’s life will take place the following day, Thursday July 12, at Collier St. United Church, 112 Collier St., in Barrie starting at 11 am. Visitation from 10 am. A reception will follow in the parish hall. If desired, donations in Joyce’s memory may be made to either Collier St. United Church or the Maycourt Club of Barrie and are greatly appreciated.
