With great sadness, we announce the death of Donald Patrick Hanney. After a courageous struggle, he left us peacefully at Hospice Simcoe on Friday September 22, 2017 in his 89th year.
Beloved husband of Linda Groves. Chosen family of Cindy Ryerse (Collin) Lisa Groves, Ezra Groves (Nancy) Grandpa, and Papa, to Emily, Jessica, Sal and Sarah.
Don also had three children Juanita, Peter, and Paul by a previous marriage to Barbara Woodstock. Three grandchildren Paul, Ian and Emma.
Predeceased by wife Frances Ann North and Brother Bill Hanney of Millbrook. Loved by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don Hanney is a familiar name in the old car hobby. Founding president of the Barrie Automotive Flea Market, that was formed at Molson’s Park in 1971, and relocated to Burl’s Creek Park in 1981, He was active for many years in the car hobby.
Don was the founding President of the Oro/Medonte Chamber of Commerce, The Huronia Fur and Feather Breeders Association and was the driving force to get the Oro-Medonte kids playing soccer and provided Burl’s Creek Family Event Park for the kids, and families to enjoy for their soccer events
Don belonged to LuLu Temple and the Barrie Yacht Club. Was a member of the Scottish Rite as well for over 50 years.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice Simcoe or Shriners Hospital.
Please join us to celebrate Don’s life on Sunday October 1st, 2017. Memories will be shared between 1 pm & 4 pm at the Barn at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds 134 8 Line S, Oro-Medonte. There will be a short classic vehicle tour, “Hanney’s Last Lap”, beginning at 1 pm. If you wish to participate with your classic ride, vehicle staging will begin at 11 am.
