GARNER, Douglas Andrew

Posted

With profound sadness the family announces the passing of Douglas, with family by his side, on Good Friday at Hospice Simcoe. Predeceased by his parents, Douglas was the youngest child of William (1978) and Clara (2009). He will be lovingly remembered by surviving brothers Jack, Bob, Tom and Larry. Doug was predeceased by his siblings Valerie Emms (2012), Ian (2010), MaryJane Vallbacka (2014), Bill (2009), Dave (2018) and Ted (2014). He is also survived by many loving in laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A gentle soul, Doug had a wonderful smile for all who came in contact with him and had a special passion for his many pets. Doug enjoyed his many years living on the lake in Shanty Bay at Roads End. There he enjoyed all the activities the seasons brought, especially the many family gatherings for special holidays and barbeques. Upon his mothers move to a retirement home, Doug became a resident of supported housing in 2004. In this environment he enjoyed many years enriched with activities and companionship.

A very special thank you to all the wonderful caregivers who took such great care of Doug and shared in his joy of life. We know, with us, you will miss his loving smile, his great manners and his little quirks he seemed to have for each of us. A kiss on the hand, pinch, giggle, eye roll, secret hand shake or the “what the heck”. Thanks for all the trips and outings, bowling, Niagara Falls, hockey and Raptors games to name a few. Brenda, Bob, Sandy, Diane, Rhonda, Bev, Shayna, Amanda, Angela and many others, thank you for taking the time to come and say goodbye, you are his heroes.

To Dr. Yan and Dr. Hsylap, respiratory care unit staff and Hospice thank you from the family for making Douglas’ last weeks comfortable.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a private family interment at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Simcoe Community Services (now Empower), 39 Fraser Court., Barrie or the Canadian Mental Health Association.
