Fresh off Commonwealth Games gold, Canadian beach volleyballers win in China

XIAMEN, China — Fresh off their gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, Canadians Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes defeated Americans Brittany Hochevar and Kelly Claes 21-19, 21-14 Sunday to win the 2018 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Xiamen Open.

Pavan, from Kitchener, Ont., and Toronto's Melissa Humana-Paredes are currently ranked No. 1 by the FIVB. Hochevar and Claes were playing their first tournament together.

"We had a lot of battles to get us here and after the Commonwealth Games and all the hype, it’s nice to just settle down and compete hard," said Pavan.

Australia's Mariafe Del Solar Artacho and Taliqua Clancy, runners-up to the Canadians earlier this month at the Gold Coast Games, beat Brazil's Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Agatha Bednarczuk 21-18, 21-17 for the bronze in China.

The Canadians beat sixth-ranked Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Agatha Bednarczuk 21-19, 21-14 in the semifinal. The Brazilians had won two of their three previous meetings.
