Proper sorting, repurposing helps company keep material out of landfill

Suite Success, a subsidiary of ESS Direct, has been working to improve their waste diversion rate through their partnership with TerraCycle Canada.

In addition to properly disposing of their waste through education and proper sorting, they also started regularly using TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Boxes to solve for “odd” items that are not accepted through municipal recycling programs.

After finding a solution for items like pens, textiles, wrappers and more, ESS DIrect reduced their waste from 50lb to 5lbs per week.

Considering that over 10 billion non bio-degradable pens are sent to landfills every year, Zero Waste Boxes provide a solution for businesses like Suite Success faced with the problem of keeping widely used office supplies from getting landfilled, incinerated or contaminating ecosystems as litter.

“The only other option available to us for the items that are not accepted in our local recycling program was to send them to the landfill. But to us, that didn’t seem like an acceptable option – we knew there had to be some other way to repurpose these materials and not leave them sitting in the landfill for hundreds of years. After a bit of research, we learned about TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Boxes,” says Alexandria Simpson, event coordinator at Suite Success.

By placing TerraCycle’s Kitchen Separation and No Separation Zero Waste Boxes in their offices, they’re able to be more proactive in diverting “thousands of pounds of waste from landfill each year”. In fact, they regularly document their progress on social media outlets to inspire other similar business to do the same.
