POLL: How should the city proceed with Fisher Auditorium, if at all?

The Fisher concept is a 650-seat theatre and event/conference centre, but it would come with a hefty price tag

For the past few years, there has been a lot of activity around the former Barrie Central Collegiate site as city officials moved to save the school's Fisher Auditorium from the wrecking ball.

The vision has been to turn it into a theatre and event centre to bring more people into Barrie's downtown.

This week, council received an update about how the project would tie into the city's tourism master plan.

The Fisher concept is a 650-seat theatre and event/conference centre. Its success would also hinge on having a hotel nearby.

Back in June, councillors were also told the minimum financial investment for the combined theatre/conference centre was estimated at $50 million and not the $25.6 million that had previously been suggested.

Council asked city staff for a report including an alternative — or "exit strategy" — for possibly listing the auditorium land as surplus and potentially putting it up for sale.

Which begs the question: Is now the right time to move ahead with this project?
