COLUMN: Long-weekend chore list not cut down to size

Long weekends never quite long enough and there's never enough time to get all done that you want to, says reporter

Did you get everything done you said you would this long weekend?

You probably promised yourself some rest, too. Did you at least do that?

Every week leading up to the long weekend is the same thing.

Time to clean out the garage, spring clean the house and garden. Get some barbecuing in and take a few things to the dump.

How much of the To-Do-List did you actually do?

It was my weekend to work, so I did get some stories out and figured I would get some chores done, too.

Wishful thinking indeed.

Heck, I knew about this column for a month and wrote it last minute on Monday!

We try so hard to balance relaxation and chores during the long weekend that we end up getting lots done without actually getting anything done.

My family has a busy weekend ahead of us as we're having a celebration of life to honour my amazing mother-in-law. My wife's family is coming from Alberta and Niagara.

This would have been a great time to get the house ready, but alas, that will likely happen during the week... when we're both working and attending meetings that we need to.

I'm sure it'll be fine.

We did have an amazing date night Saturday and got some parents/kids time in as well over the weekend, but still it would have been nice to get a lot more done around the house.

My wife also had some work things to get done, so house chores were on the back burner.

Do you do that, too?

Get much needed play time in and regret  not getting work done or vice versa?

I imagine if we got the entire house and outside perfect we'd be upset we didn't focus on family time.

We did get the grass cut!

Well, half cut.

Our mower is broken and the battery died on the neighbour's about halfway through.

It's not supposed rain today or Wednesday, so I'm sure I'll get the rest done then.

Should be lots of time, even though we're in the midst of a provincial election and the news hasn't stopped.

Maybe next long weekend will be different... when my wife is away for work and busting her butt doing that and I'm organizing a three-day live event show and entertaining the kids.

Should be able to get lots done then.

The only for sure thing is we'll never learn.

Long weekends are only that in name alone.

They're never quite long enough and there is never enough time to get all done that you want to.

But hey, it's short work week!
