Vikings defeat Kodiaks to take sole position of second place in the SCAA standings

A pair of city football teams with matching 3-1 records in the final days of the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) senior schedule butted heads this afternoon in north-end Barrie.

The Barrie North Vikings hosted the south end's Bear Creek Kodiaks on Thursday, with substantial playoff implications on the line among the Simcoe County District School Board teams.

The Vikings improved to 4-1 with a 31-7 win over the Kodiaks, who fell to 3-2 on the season.

In the SCAA senior football standings, the Eastview Wildcats (5-0) remain undefeated.

On Monday, the Innisdale Invaders (0-5) will host the Orillia Nighthawks (1-3).

The regular-season schedule wraps up next Thursday with Eastview in Collingwood to take on the Fighting Owls (2-2), while Bear Creek will travel to Orillia to face the Nighthawks. Barrie North heads to Alliston to close out its schedule against Banting (1-3).

The Barrie North Vikings senior football team won the SCAA championship last year with an 8-6 win over Eastview.

This year's SCAA quarterfinal game will take place Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m., followed by the semifinal on Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m., both at locations yet to be determined.

The SCAA final will be played Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at J.C. Massie Field at Georgian College. The winner of that game advances to the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) championship game where they'll play the winner of the Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County (CSASC) senior loop.

This year, the CSASC fielded only two teams, which are the St. Joan of Arc Knights (2-0) and the St. Thomas Aquinas Stingers (0-2). In two games, the Barrie school outscored the Stingers, 81-0. The Knights travelled to Aurora on Wednesday to play the team from St. Andrew's College.

The CSASC junior loop, meanwhile, has four teams participating this year, including St. Therea's (4-0), St. Joan of Arc (2-2), St. Peter's (1-3), and St. Joseph's (1-3).

In the SCAA junior ranks, Nantyr Shores and Collingwood lead the pack with perfect 4-0 records, followed by Eastview (4-1), Barrie North (2-2), Bear Creek (2-2), Orillia (1-4), Innisdale (0-4), and Nottawasaga Pines (0-4). Final scores from Thursday's junior games were not available at the time of publication.

The junior SCAA schedule also finishes on Thursday, Oct. 24, with the playoffs set to begin on Oct. 28.
