VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Varsity team overcame an early 9-0 deficit to beat the Toronto Thunder 20-12. The win improved the Stallions to 6-0 on the season and puts them in firm position to secure homefield advantage in the playoffs with a win or tie in either of their last two regular season games.

The Stallions were able to stay in the game with a great defensive and special teams effort that helped the team with excellent field position for much of the game. The Stallions managed to take a 13-12 lead in the fourth quarter on Jordan Travis’ second field goal after a key third down pick up by running back Justin Janicki. The defence held firm in the fourth quarter and stopped the Thunder on multiple drives.

Linebacker Gavin Wallin stepped up with a huge third down quarterback sack that stopped the Thunder in Huronia territory and then a second strip sack that virtually iced the game after Aiden Alfieri took the fumble to the endzone for a touchdown.

Justin Winn connected with Jeremy Hussey to round out the offensive highlights. Thomas Perri once again had an impressive game with some key receptions on offence and an outstanding tackle on second down in the fourth quarter to force a Thunder punt.

Perri’s efforts were almost negated by an undisciplined penalty in the final minute that gave the Thunder a chance to tie the game. Charlie Doering had an impactful game with some big hits at linebacker and some heavy lifting filling in on the offensive line.

Andy Shrubsole had an impressive pass break up and some big tackles on defence. The Stallions next game is this Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Barrie Sports Complex in Midhurst against the 2-3-1 Oshawa Hawkeyes. The game should be highly competitive because Oshawa is fighting to stay in the playoff hunt and features one of the better defenses in the league.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Huronia Stallions Junior Varsity squad fell to 2-4 on the season with a 31-14 loss to the undefeated Scarborough Thunder.

The Stallions played an excellent first half on the strength of two interceptions by Jagger Grewal and Scott Laybolt. Grewal’s pick was set up by a great batted ball in coverage by Ty Racine and Laybolt took his interception to the house for a touchdown after an excellent zone drop from the linebacker position.

The touchdown made the score 10-7 at the half but that would be the closest the Stallions would get as the Thunder capitalized on some big plays in the second half to secure the victory. The Stallions had a nice late highlight when backup quarterback Tyler Carlson connected with Payton Plesh for a short touchdown pass.

The Stallions next game is this Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Barrie Sports Complex in Midhurst against the 2-4 Oshawa Hawkeyes.

The game has huge playoff implications for both teams and can be considered a virtual elimination game.

BANTAM

The Huronia Stallions Bantam team fell to 0-7 on the season with an 84-0 blowout loss to the Scarborough Thunder. The Stallions have a much-needed bye week to lick their wounds before finishing the season on July 13 on the road against Etobicoke.
