The Georgian Grizzlies golf team had tremendous results at the 2021 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Golf Championships hosted by Sault College held at Crimson Ridge Golf in Sault Ste. Marie.

The three-round event began Monday and wrapped up on Wednesday and was the first OCAA championship in any sport after all planned seasons were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Grizzlies were in contention both individually and as a team throughout the tournament and were led by Christian Leduc.

Leduc, a native of Innisfil, is in his first year at Georgian and played some terrific golf to earn the individual bronze medal.

The Grizzlies rookie started the tournament posting the lowest score of the day in round one with a 72. He then followed that with a round of 80 on Tuesday and closed the tournament strong, posting a score of 73 to finish in third place individually.

Leduc became the first Grizzlies golfer to earn an individual medal since Brady Zordan earned silver at the 2018-19 OCAA Golf Championships.

He wasn’t the only Grizzlies golfer, or even the only Leduc family member to play an incredible tournament.

Christian’s brother, Noah Leduc (Innisfil) and teammate Josh Taylor (Barrie), the reigning OCAA male golf athlete of the week, both played well throughout the tournament to finish in a tie for seventh place.

Teammates Mason Skinner (Georgina) finished in a tie for 23rd and Garrett Watson (Penetang) finished 27th overall.

With those strong individual performances, the Grizzlies as a team earned the bronze medal as they posted solid combined scores of 302, 321 and 319 for a total of 942 strokes through the three rounds of the Championship. They finished just six strokes behind the silver medal winning Fanshawe Falcons and only nine strokes behind the tournament’s gold medalists, the St. Lawrence Surge.

This adds to the strong golf legacy at Georgian, as this is the 19th medal (four gold, nine silver, six bronze) won in school history and the first team medal since the 2017-18 season.

With their medal-winning performance, the Grizzlies men’s team has qualified for the 2021 CCAA Golf National Championships presented by PING which will take place Oct. 11-15 hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor.
