The Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team opened their 2019 season on Friday afternoon when they took on the Humber Hawks in Etobicoke.

It was a solid way to start the season for the Grizzlies as they came out on top 26-15. It was the first match between these two teams since 2015, with Humber rejoining OCAA men’s rugby this season.

Newcomer Zack Patfield (Minesing) scored the first try of the season for the Grizzlies nearly midway through the first half to give Georgian the lead. It was one of two tries for Patfield in the game.

Last year’s OCAA west division rookie of the year Tennyson Brown (Alliston) looked like he is poised for another strong season as he scored a try.

Liam Wilson (Orillia) scored the other try for the Grizzlies while last year’s OCAA scoring champion Ryan Connolly (Barrie) had three converts.

Georgian has won four straight OCAA west division titles and have medaled in each of the previous four seasons.

The Grizzlies will play their home opener on Friday, Sept. 20 under the lights of J.C. Massie Field on the Barrie campus of Georgian College when they host the Conestoga Condors at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the home opener will be available at the doors for $5.

The game will be the kickoff the festivities for the annual Athletic Alumni Weekend. Any alumni looking to come out are encouraged to register beforehand. More details about Alumni Weekend are available here.
