Big third inning pushes Baycats past Panthers for road win

KITCHENER – A four-run third inning put the Barrie Baycats ahead for good Monday afternoon in Kitchener.

Trailing 1-0, the Baycats scored their runs on four hits and held on for a 6-5 road victory over the Panthers.

Noel McGarry-Doyle and Ryan Rijo each drove in a pair for Barrie. Tyler Plumpton went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Jake Wilson drove in a run.

Riley Hoover (1-0) pitched five innings for the win. He yielded four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Brad Grieveson struck out two in a scoreless ninth for the save.

Adam Robertson (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over 2.2 innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Stephen Whalen and Tyler Hinrikus each homered and drove in two for the Panthers. Stephen Nahrabeki went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Mullen, Boon power Majors past Royals

LONDON – Robert Mullen homered and drove in three to lead the London Majors to a 6-1 win over Guelph Monday afternoon at Labatt Park.

Mullen finished a triple short of the cycle as part of a three-hit afternoon. He also scored twice. Cleveland Brownlee went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Austin Wilkie added an RBI.

Owen Boon (2-0) went the distance, walking two and striking out 13. He scattered six hits and allowed an unearned run.

Ethan Hammond had two of Guelph’s six hits. Conner Morro scored the lone Royals’ run.

Emilis Guerrero (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out three.
