Baycats complete comeback, still in pennant hunt (16 photos)

Barrie is tied with Kitchener atop IBL standings; Panthers still have two games to play

BARRIE – A six-run eighth inning capped the Barrie Baycats' 12-9 comeback win over the visiting Brantford Red Sox Thursday night at Coates Stadium.

Barrie trailed 9-3 after Brantford scored seven in the fourth, but the Baycats chipped away with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth before overtaking the Red Sox two innings later. 

July Player of the Month Jordan Castaldo drove in three and scored twice. His 47 RBI leads teammate Kevin Atkinson by one atop the IBL leaderboard. Atkinson drove in two and also scored twice against Brantford. 

Kyle DeGrace singled and added a solo home run, Parker Walker and Ryan Rijo each had an RBI, and Branfy Infante went 2 for-4 with two RBI and two runs. 

Brad Bissell (1-1) earned the win in relief. He threw three scoreless innings, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out three. Starter Emilis Guerrero went four innings and allowed nine runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts. 

Brantford's Gianfranco Morello had three hits, two RBI and a run, Jesse Fishbaum added two hits, two RBI and two runs, and Luis Perez went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI and two runs. 

Chris Iltshishin, Doug Parks and Jacob Reid had an RBI apiece. 

Eric Lindsay (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Abel De Los Santos went six innings and gave up six runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Barrie (25-11) is tied atop the standings with Kitchener, which has two games in hand. Brantford fell to 5-29. 

Leafs hang on to beat Panthers 

KITCHENER – The Toronto Maple Leafs made the most of their nine hits in a 4-2 win over Kitchener Thursday night at Jack Couch Park. 

Cooper Lamb drove in two on a pair of hits, while Ryan Johnston and Grant Tamane had an RBI apiece. Damon Topolie added two hits, and Marcus Knecht went 2-for-4 with a run. 

Alberto Tirado (2-3) pitched six scoreless innings for the win. He scattered three hits and struck out nine. Jean Carlos Henriquez picked up his first save after allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. 

For Kitchener, Brian Burton drove in the Panthers' only run. 

Yuen Socarras (3-1) took the loss, giving up two runs and four hits in five innings. He walked one and fanned 10. 

Toronto improved to 15-20, and Kitchener dropped to 23-11.
