BARRIE – First the Barrie Baycats beat Mother Nature, and then they beat the Brantford Red Sox, 5-0, Saturday evening.
Heavy rain ended the game after seven innings – two more than needed for it to be an official game.
Starlin Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run, and Glenn Jackson had two hits, two steals, an RBI and a run. Ryan Rijo added an RBI.
Matthew St. Kitts (2-0) scattered five hits and struck out six with a walk in seven innings as Barrie improved to 21-7.
Luis Perez and Jacob Reid each doubled for the Red Sox (4-24).
Edison Frias (1-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Mercier drives in five in Jackfish win
WELLAND – Andrew Mercier drove in five to lead the Welland Jackfish to a 10-4 home win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday afternoon.
Mercier singled three times as Welland had 12 hits off two Toronto pitchers. Brendon Dadson drove in a run and scored, Brendon Nicholson and Caleb Feuerstake both had two hits and two runs, Bryce O'Farrell had an RBI, DeAndre Asbury-Heath scored twice, Wilson Soriano drove in a run and scored twice, and Tyler Wood went 2-for-5.
Christian Young (2-0) earned the win, giving up four runs on 11 hits in 7.2 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
Toronto starter Justin Cicatello (3-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings.
Offensively, Greg Carrington went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Cooper Lamb had three hits and a run, Damon Topolie singled twice and scored, Ryan Santos doubled twice, and Jonathan Solazzo singled and doubled.
Welland moved to 15-13, and Toronto dropped to 10-20.
Panthers-Royals called after four innings
GUELPH – Saturday evening's game between the Kitchener Panthers and Guelph Royals at David E. Hastings Stadium was called after four innings.
Kitchener led 3-2 at the time, but the game was not official as it did not go 4.5 innings.
