The American Psychological Association’s Division 26 Early Career Award recognizes the work of early career scientists that have made significant contributions to the field of psychology and historical studies.

Waypoint is pleased to communicate that in August, the 2016 award was given to Dr. Jennifer Bazar, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Waypoint Research Institute.

Dr. Bazar joined Waypoint in 2014 to capture the 80-year legacy of the Oak Ridge building with the creation of the Remembering Oak Ridge Digital Archive and Exhibit.

The exhibit features artefacts, photographs and archival documents to demonstrate how treatment practices, restrictions and individual experiences both changed and remained consistent from the division’s opening in 1933 until the closure of the Oak Ridge building in 2014.

The project expanded to include the revitalization of the Waypoint History Walk. Initiated by a dedicated group of staff and volunteers to help capture the important heritage of the hospital, most of the exhibits in the original display were put in storage to accommodate construction of the Atrium building.

Thanks to Dr. Bazar and her team, the public spaces of the hospital are now alive with history.

“Dr. Bazar’s knowledge and expertise in the history of psychology made her the perfect person to honour the nearly 160-year history of the hospital and our grounds,” said Howard Barbaree, VP Research and Academics. “Capturing that history ensures we remember the journey we have taken.”

“We are very proud of both exhibits and invite our community to explore the digital exhibit and the History Walk,” said Carol Lambie, President and CEO. “Waypoint extends our congratulations to Dr. Bazar on this noteworthy achievement and wishes her all the best in her new position as the Curator of the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre.”
