Woman struck by car downtown

A portion of Dunlop Street West was closed for investigation

A 54-year-old woman was rushed to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre Tuesday evening after being struck by a car in downtown Barrie.

Witnesses flagged down patrolling officers who were first on the scene within seconds of the 5 p.m. incident.

A man driving a white Buick travelling eastbound on Dunlop Street West at Mary Street struck the woman when police say she darted into traffic.

"A pedestrian ran northbound on Mary street, not with the right of way, and was struck by the vehicle," said Barrie Police Sgt. Mike Ross. "It was a female who fell to the ground and struck her head. There are head injuries."

Ross says the driver is shaken up and concerned about the woman, who police later tweeted was in serious condition.

Ross said charges against the driver are unlikely.

"The right of way is for vehicles," he said.

Police closed a portion of Dunlop Street West and were urging motorists to avoid the area.

Officers were holding the scene pending reconstruction of the incident.

"It's tough down here," said Ross. "People run across. It's a busy street and there are cars parked, so constantly people are darting across and taking their chances. Unfortunately this time it went the wrong way."
