What's happening in Barrie this week?

We are over the hump for summer holidays, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over. There are still plenty of exciting things to do in Barrie and this week is jam-packed with things for everyone.

Wednesday continues to be a busy day in the city as the Barrie Thunder Classics Cruise Nights takes place in Heritage Park at 5 p.m. until dusk.

Thursday, August 18:

The Barrie Public Library continues to be the place for families during the day. Head to the BPL for some morning and afternoon fun of bingo and scavenger hunts. Check out availability and schedules on the BPL website.

If you need to cool off, head to Batteaux Park for the final instalment of Hot Summer Nights. The Barrie Fire and Emergency Services have a great turnout for this staying-cool event and would love to as many people out as possible to say thank you. Fire and safety tips, pizza for a dollar are highlighted by the fire truck using its water resources to keep you cool.

Friday, August 19:

Stop by Fox's Deli & Bakery (96 Victoria St.) to help raise funds for Radio 4 Cardiology. $1.00 for Every Dozen Hamburger & Hot Dog Buns Sold will go towards bringing Advanced Cardiac Care Closer to Home

Saturday, August 20:

This is going to be one of the busiest days of the week.

The South Simcoe Roller Rebels will be at the Holly Rec Centre for a double header. It is the final home game of the year for the Rebels as they take on the All-Stars Misfit Militia, and then the Toronto Outrage Men’s Team. The doors open at 5 p.m. and the whistle blows at 6 p.m.

A long standing Barrie tradition gets under way Saturday as well as The Ferris Lane Community Church hosts their 13th Annual Summer Picnic. In their 4th year of having a Pig Roast and outdoor movie, there will also be fresh local corn, popcorn, snow cones, face-painting, inflatable activities for the kids and of course, a roasted pig. The event is always free, but donations of new back to school items will be gladly accepted and given to local shelters. The event is located 49 Ferris Lane and the festivities get under way at 6:30 p.m. Check out the event on FB or on twitter at @FerrisLnChurch.

Top off this Saturday with a farewell to one of the most iconic Canadian bands to ever grace a stage. Heritage Park will have a big screen and speakers up and will be broadcasting the commercial free concert of the Tragically Hip live from Kingston Ontario. The event goes from 8:30 p.m. to finish (12 a.m. likely) and attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or lawn chair — but it’s the Hip so you’ll likely be standing the whole time.

Sunday August 21:

The Barrie Game Exchange is at the Army Navy Club (7 George Street) from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. You can buy, sell and trade video games with other enthusiasts for just a $5 entry fee.
