A London man charged with second-degree murder was remanded in custody Wednesday morning following a brief appearance in Barrie court.

25-year old Jason Heffernan is accused in the death of 29-year old Corby Stott of Wyevale.

Stott was pronounced dead at hospital Saturday after being hit by a car following an altercation in the parking lot of the Midland Wal Mart.

Heffernan was arrested at the scene.

"Mr. Heffernan intends to plead not guilty to the charge and hopes to get to trial in a timely way so that the circumstances of the event can be known from his perspective," Heffernan's lawyer Sean Robichaud said outside court.

"We encourage any witnesses to the event to contact our office to assist with our own investigations into the matter," Robichaud added.

A publication ban was placed on the proceeding.

Two young women who identified themselves as friends of the accused declined to offer any comment. It was not apparent if anyone representing Stott attended the court appearance.

Heffernan will make his next court appearance via video on July 27.
