Walk for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease gets moving at Livita Barrington

'We have a beautiful trail that goes all around the building, through gardens and everything,' says community relations director

The Livita Barrington Retirement Residence in south-end Barrie plans to walk all over Alzheimer’s disease this week and they want your help.

This Thursday and Friday will see residents, staff and family members form Team Livita Barrington and walk 100 laps around the building at 450 Yonge St.

Community relations director Joy Grenon told BarrieToday the event will take place over the course of two days to allow for appropriate social distancing and health protocols.

“We wanted to find a way to not only have fun raising money for the cause, but also find a way to do it safely for everyone involved,” Grenon said.

The idea is to walk 10,006 steps, one for every person in Simcoe County who suffers from Alzheimer’s.

The kick off begins Thursday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m. and closing will be Friday, May 28 at 2 p.m.

Grenon said as it is, there will be groups of five walking while social distancing and taking precautions.

She believes their property is perfect for the event.

“We have a beautiful trail that goes all around the building, through gardens and everything,” said Grenon. “Its been a tough year for everyone and to be able to get outdoors and get some fresh air together is exactly what could all use.

"It is also something that hits home for us as we have people dealing with Alzheimer's and dementia, so we see the need for helping," she added.

Every donation made in support of Team Livita Barrington is automatically entered into a raffle where the winner could win a $50 Sport Chek gift card.
