NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF BARRIE

*************************
The first day of voting for the Ward 7 by-election is less than a week away.

The City of Barrie wants to ensure residents have the information they need before heading to the polls.

To make voting fast and easy, if you live in Ward 7, make sure you’re on the voters’ list.

Residents can check for their name on the list by visiting barrie.ca/elections (click the “Are you on the Voters’ List” link) or by calling 705-728-VOTE (8683) from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

To be on the list and vote in the by-election one must: be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age, a resident of Ward 7, or a non-resident owner or tenant of land in Ward Seven (or their spouse), and not be prohibited from voting under any law.

Based on statistics from past municipal elections in Barrie, approximately 50 per cent of voters wait until the final day to cast their ballots and approximately half of them vote within the last two hours.

There is no need to wait –  residents are encouraged to vote early.

Voting  will take place at Holly Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue) on the following dates:

  • January 23, 2016, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • January 26, 2016, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • January 28, 2016, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.
  • February 1, 2016, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Note: Special voting opportunities will be held at Roberta Place and Roberta Lodge for the residents of the two facilities on Tuesday, Jan. 26 between 9 and 11:30 a.m. and on Monday, Feb.1 from 9 to 10 a.m.

Residents are reminded to bring their voter notice along with acceptable identification (showing name and address) when going to vote.

Voter notices will arrive in the mail this week to all ward 7 residents on the Voters’ List. Residents who do not receive a voter notice, may not be on the Voters’ List and are encouraged to check the List before going to vote.

For more information about the by-election including a list of certified candidates, visit barrie.ca/elections, call the Legislative and Court Services Department at 705-728-VOTE (8683) or email [email protected].
